VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Thanks to victories Tuesday by
Camren Wynder-Hill in the heptathlon and the distance medley relay, the Norfolk State men's track team has sole possession of first place after the second day of competition at the 2022 MEAC Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Wynder-Hill set a new school record by tallying 4,815 points in the heptathlon, winning three of the seven events. The person whose school record he broke – teammate
Jahquan Christopher – finished second in the heptathlon with 4,553 points, which also set a new PR.
The distance medley relay team of
Regan Kimtai,
Jeremiah Zellander,
Lelei Too and
Je'Shawn Walker capped the day by winning their race in 10 minutes, 23.15 seconds. That win pushed NSU's total through day two to 59 points, nine ahead of second-place Howard.
The Spartans also got 11 points Tuesday from the high jump.
Joshua Sutton placed third in the event after clearing a top height of 6-6, while
Isaac Haywood was fourth (6-3.5).
The Spartans also fared well in Tuesday's heats. Sutton and
Antaeveon Payne advanced through the 60-meter hurdles heats and did
Anthony Franklin and
Kai Cole in the 60 meters. The Spartans had a trio of athletes,
Trequan Barnes,
Dazon Harrison and
Savien Hayes, qualify in the 400 meters. All three of those races are Wednesday.
Wednesday's action will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's pole vault. Running events will start at 12:30 p.m. with the women's mile.
