Spartans Return Home To Host Battle at the Bay This Weekend

NORFOLK, Va. – Coming off a 3-1 weekend at the HU Classic, the Norfolk State softball team looks to carry the momentum into this weekend's Battle at the Bay being hosted by both NSU and Hampton. The Spartans will host a single game on Friday, three games on Saturday and another single game on Sunday.

The Spartans get things started on Friday at 3 p.m. against Wagner. The Seahawks opened their season at the ECU Pirate Clash going 0-5 with losses to Colgate, Rutgers, and host East Carolina.

On Saturday, NSU plays in the first game of the day on the NSU Softball Field against Youngstown State at 10 a.m. The Penguins come into the weekend with a 4-5 record after going 2-2 over the weekend falling to Winthrop and Western Carolina but picking up wins over Albany and Towson. The Spartans will close out the day with a 2 p.m. game against Penn. The Quakers open the season this week after going 5-5 last spring.

Sunday will feature a single game between NSU and Penn starting at 10 a.m. The Spartans will have both live video and live stats available for all games played at the NSU Softball Field.

  • Junior Imani Moore leads the Spartans with a .419 batting average. Last weekend she had a .571 BA with eight hits in 14 at bats. She had three hits each against St. Bonaventure with two doubles and a triple. For her efforts she was named the MEAC Player of the Week.
  • Senior Joana Vallejo went 1-0 from the circle last weekend. She finished the game with seven strikeouts, one more than her two previous appearances combined and did not allow any earned runs. She was named the MEAC Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the conference officer earlier this week.
  • For the first two weeks of the season, the Spartans have won the MEAC Pitcher of the Week award after Alexis Robinson won it after going 2-0 during the NSU-Hampton Classic two weeks ago.
  • Four NSU players are hitting .300 or better through the first two weekends. In addition to Moore's .419, senior Lily Potter is hitting .400 with 10 hits including three doubles and a triple. Redshirt senior Tuli Iosefa is hitting .385 with 10 hits and four RBIs. Junior Morgan Johnson is hitting .300 with six hits, including a pair of doubles.
  • Penelope Russ leads the Seahawks through their first five games with six hits in nine at bats. Both Scarlett Lloyd and Kate Wolf have hit home runs for WC.
  • Eve Harvey is 0-3 after starting all five games last weekend. She gave up 14 earned runs in 17.0 innings pitched. Lloyd is 0-2 from the circled after giving coming in relief twice, giving up 20 earned runs in just 8.0 innings pitched.
  • Conchetta Rinaldi leads YSU with a .440 batting average with four doubles and a home run. The Penguins hit four home runs in their first two weekends of action with Rinaldi, Taylor Truran, Grace Cea and Megan Turner all hitting the ball over the outfield fence.
  • Elle Buffenbarger has started six games for YSU and has thrown three complete games. She is 3-2 from the circle, giving up 17 earned runs and walking 22 batters but has struck out 43 opposing hitters. She currently has a 4.15 ERA.
