Boykin's Double in 8th Lifts NSU to 1st Win of Season, 2-1 over Georgetown

NORFOLK, Va. – Phillip Boykin hit a two-out RBI double to left field in the bottom of the eighth to help push Norfolk State past Georgetown 2-1 on Friday at Marty L. Miller Field, giving the Spartans their first win of the year.

Jacob Council hit a two-out single to start the winning rally in the eighth. Boykin then blasted a long fly over the left fielder's head, scoring Council from first to break a 1-1 tie.

Spartan reliever Nolan Manzer worked around a one-out error in the ninth, stranding a runner at second to finish off the win for NSU (1-3).

The Spartans struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Dionte Brown hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a misplay in the outfield. Brown took second on a groundout and scored on Council's two-out single off the pitcher's glove.

NSU left James Deloatch was impressive in his second start of the season, allowing just one hit in 5.1 innings and striking out seven. But the Hoyas (1-3) scored an unearned run with Manzer in the game in the seventh to tie the game as Deloatch took a no-decision.

Otherwise, Manzer (1-0) was strong in finishing what Deloatch started, as the two combined on a two-hitter. Manzer earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and no earned runs while striking out three.

Brown, Council and Boykin each went 2-for-4 for the Spartans, who outhit the Hoyas 7-2.

The teams play the second game of their series at 1 p.m. Saturday.
