Newcomers Shine as Spartans Drop Heartbreaker at Loyola (MD) 4-3

Baltimore, Md. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team lost a heartbreaker on Sunday, falling 4-3 to Loyola University Maryland. The teams split the six singles matches, making Loyola's doubles victory the decisive point.

NSU's three newcomers all notched their first singles wins in a Spartan uniform on Sunday. After the Greyhounds swept the doubles slate, NSU freshman Aleksandra Evdokimova evened the match at one by defeating LUM's Olivia Tracy 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 position.

Sophomore Amber Fuller, who transferred from West Virginia University in the offseason, finally broke through on Sunday after dropping her first two contests of the season in tight, three-set finishes. She successfully dispatched LUM's Lauren Manwiller 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, giving her team its first lead of the season.

NSU freshman Breana Cook knocked off Anna Rico 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 position a short time later. After losing the doubles point, the Spartans had suddenly surged ahead for a 3-1 lead in the match.

But the Greyhounds' depth paid off, storming back to snatch a victory out of NSU's clutches. LUM's four through six slots had combined for a 7-1 singles record heading into Sunday's match, and they came through for the team once again.

Genevieve Wurtz took down NSU's Niya Grant 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position to cut the Spartan lead to one. Jessica Bodowes defeated Laura Ruiz 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 soon after to tie things up 3-3. The match came down to a battle at No. 5 singles, with the Greyhounds' Sandra Aguirre prevailing over Andrea Barcenas 6-4, 6-3.

The loss dropped NSU to 0-3 on the season. The Spartans have over a week to prepare for their home opener against Longwood, set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 9.
