No. 31 ODU Women’s Tennis Blanks NSU, 7-0

Box Score Norfolk, Va. – In a battle between the two universities of Norfolk, Va., No. 31 Old Dominion defeated Norfolk State 7-0 on Thursday evening at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The match took place at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center, about four miles from the NSU campus.
 
The Spartans debuted a new combination of doubles pairs against the Monarchs. Zada McMorris and Laura Ruiz played at the No. 1 position, with Breana Cook and Aleksandra Evdokimova at No. 2. Andrea Barcenas and Amber Fuller teamed up to complete the lineup.
 
Barcenas and Fuller fell 6-0 to Sofia Johnson and Marina Alcaide, before Yulia Starodubtseva and Ralitsa Alexandrova took down Cook and Evdokimova 6-1 to clinch the doubles point for the Monarchs. Ruiz and McMorris battled to a 2-5 score against ODU's top doubles team, but the match went unfinished.
 
Niya Grant lost to Alexandrova 6-0, 6-0 to at No. 6 singles, before Barcenas and Cook lost by the same score at the fifth and third position, respectively. Fuller fell 6-0, 6-1 to Johnson at No. 2.
 
Evdokimova dropped the first set, 6-1, to Starodubtseva, the No. 33 ranked player in the country. The NSU freshman fought hard in the second set, eventually losing 6-1 against the Conference USA Player of the Year.
 
Ruiz similarly found much more success in the second set than the first. She lost the first set 6-1 and dropped a long second set 6-4.
 
The loss dropped the Spartans to 0-4 on the season, returning to the court on Friday for their home opener against Hampton.
