Norfolk, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team opened the 2022 slate against William & Mary at the McMormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, losing 7-0 to the Tribe.
Amber Fuller was the only Spartan to win a set on Saturday. Fuller matched up against William & Mary's Elisa Van Meeteren at the No. 2 singles position, winning the first set 6-2, before dropping the next two 6-0 and 6-3.
Fuller paired with
Breana Cook at No. 1 doubles, losing 6-0 to the Tribe's top team, Mila Saric and Hedda Gurholt. Sasha Evdokimova and
Laura Ruiz dropped their No. 2 match against William & Mary's Emma Fernald and Ine Stange 6-1 shortly after, giving the Tribe the doubles point.
The No. 3 doubles match was the tightest, but did not finish with the Tribe clinching the doubles point prior. NSU's
Andrea Barcenas and
Zada McMorris trailed Julia Monroe and Shruti Rajaji Srinivasan 4-3 before the match went unfinished.
Evdokimova, playing her first dual singles match of her college career, lost to Gurholt 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Cook, also making her college debut, couldn't complete her comeback bid against Raffaela Alhach at the No. 3 slot, falling 6-1, 6-3.
Ruiz fell 6-3, 6-3 to Fernald in the No. 4 position, and Barcenas lost 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to Lisa Fukutoku. McMorris was matched with Kensie Cricchio in the last singles slot, with the latter winning 6-0, 6-0.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, Feb. 18 against Virginia Tech at 5 P.M at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
