NORFOLK, Va. – For the first time since the 2017-18 season, the Norfolk State bowling team will participate in the 2022 MEAC Bowling Championship this weekend. The championship will take place at Pinboy's at the Beach in Virginia Beach.
After the MEAC took only the top four seeded teams in 2021, the Spartans come into the 2022 championship as the number eight seed and will face off against number nine seed Howard on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the winner facing top-seeded and No. 4 nationally North Carolina A&T.
At the MEAC Conference #1 earlier this season, NSU picked up a 774-748 win over the Bison. During the MEAC Conference #2, the Spartans knocked off then No. 6 NC A&T 899-885 in one of the biggest upsets in program history.
Crystal Brewer leads the Spartans this season with a 187.9 pin average. At the Virginia Union Invitational earlier this season she had a career-high 279, while averaging 216.6 for the tournament. Her 279 game is tied for 12th best in MEAC history.
Chanel Staton ranks second on the team in pin average with a 169.9. She had a season-high 203 in the VUU Invitational. Her season best average was a 176.8 during the Stallings Invitational last month.
Megan Wheat is third on the team in pin average with a 165.0. Her season high came at the MEAC Conference #2 with a 201. Her 178.4 average at the event was her best pin average of the season.
At the HBCU/TNBA Invitational earlier this month, both Brewer and Wheat were named to the All-Tournament Team. Brewer was a First-Team selection while Wheat was named to the Second Team.
The Spartans enter the championship with a 17-46 overall record this season including a 2-14 mark in the MEAC.
