NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State sprinters
Kai Cole and
Anthony Franklin have pushed each other all year long. That continued Saturday at the Norfolk State Invitational at Dick Price Stadium, with both posting huge personal records as they continue to excel this outdoor season.
A week after Franklin edged Cole in the 100 meters at Duke, Cole just nipped Franklin at the tape this week. Both standouts were sure to be content with the results, though, as Cole clocked a 10.28 to finish second in the event and Franklin 10.29 for third. Neither had gone under 10.40 before the weekend.
Whereas Cole edged Franklin in the 200 at Duke, again the tables were turned this weekend. Franklin won the 200 in a PR of 20.99, while Cole was second in 21.09.
Cole ranks second in the MEAC in the 100 and first in the 200m this season while Franklin close behind in both.
Junior
Regan Kimtai posed NSU's other win on the track. He closed strong to win the 1,500 in 3:59.69, a season-best and the top time in the MEAC this year.
Meshack Kipchirchir was fourth in the event in 4:11.40.
Evans Cheruiyot was runner-up in the 5,000 meters, but the top collegiate finisher. His time was 15:20.31, which also leads the conference.
Other high finishes over the weekend came via
Jordan Williams in the 400 hurdles (53.28, season-best) and
Dazon Harrison in the 400m (48.44). Both finished in third place.
The Spartans posted three top-five finishes in field events.
Isaac Haywood was runner-up in the triple jump with a best effort of 47 feet, 11 inches.
Camren Wynder-Hill placed third in the long jump (23-3.5) and
Joshua Sutton tied for third in the high jump (6-4).
The Spartans will compete at both the Virginia Challenge and Morgan State Legacy Meets next weekend.
