BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Both sprinter
Kai Cole and
Joshua Peterson made their Division I outdoor regional debuts Wednesday at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Competing alongside some of the best athletes in the country, Cole and Peterson saw highly successful campaigns come to an end in the first round of the meet.
Cole clocked a time of 10.51 seconds in the 100 meters, placing seventh in his heat and 39th overall in the field of 48. Only the top 24 advance to Friday's quarterfinal round. Despite not advancing, Cole had a memorable year, finishing as MEAC runner-up in both the 100 and 200 meters outdoor, while sweeping the 60m and 200m titles during indoor season.
Peterson finished 20th in the long jump. After fouling on his first two attempts, the freshman leaped 24 feet, 1.75 inches on his final jump. Only the top 12 earned berths at nationals, with the last qualifier jumping 24-8.5 Wednesday. Peterson was the MEAC outdoor long jump champion earlier this month with a top effort of 25-1.25 (wind-aided) in his first outdoor conference meet as a Spartan.
NSU still has Malika Pride competing in the women's 400-meter first round on Thursday and
Isaac Haywood in the triple jump on Friday.
