NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team got its fall campaign started last weekend with an appearance at the Marlin Fall Invitational at Virginia Wesleyan.
Two-time All-MEAC selection
Federico Rebecchini led the way for the Spartans, finishing the weekend with a 4-1 record, winning both of his singles matches. His doubles partner,
Hugo Massoni Lena, also shined with three wins and two losses.
All four Spartans earned at least one victory on the first day of competition. Rebecchini and Massoni Lena earned their first doubles victory of the season 8-5 over Virginia Wesleyan's Felix Bevc and Alen Curovic, before
Ibrahim Abbas and
Roosevelt Brown III later defeated Ollie Custer and Will Trocchi of Methodist 8-2.
The Spartans went 3-1 in singles play on Saturday against Southern Virginia, finishing the day on a high note. Rebecchini won his match 6-1, 6-3, Massoni Lena earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory, and Brown notched an 8-3 triumph.
NSU faced off against Christopher Newport on Sunday, splitting the two doubles matches. Rebecchini and Massoni Lena took down Alec Strause and Vincent Truong in a tight 8-6 nailbiter. Rebecchini notched the Spartans' lone singles win of the day 6-2, 6-2 against Truong.
