LEXINGTON, Va. – Gidion Sigei and
Kai Cole picked up first place finishes on Saturday as the Norfolk State men's track wrapped another successful indoor performance at the VMI Winter Classic at the VMI-Corps Physical Training Facility.
Â
Cole crossed the finish line ahead of the rest not once, but twice, winning both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. The senior sprinter posted a 6.75 in the 60 for a narrow victory, before clocking a 21.32 in his winning 200 meter race.
Â
On the contrary from Cole's brilliance in short bursts, Sigei made his impact in the longest events of the day. He took first in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:46.04, before tallying a sixth-place finish in the mile (4:15.89).
Â
Brian Rotich followed behind his teammate, coming in fourth with a season-best time of 15:06.47.
Â
Norfolk State continued to dominate the long and middle distance events, as
Regan Kimtai took second in the 800 meters (1:55.87). He finished just .18 behind Milligan's Sylas Chambers.
Â
Dwight Henry was the final Spartan to crack the top-three in his respective event, finishing third in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.18.
Â
Rodric Cox-Cooper notched a leap of 22-feet, 11.75 inches in the long jump to earn fifth place, before recording a 46-foot, 8.75-inch triple jump to take seventh.
Â
Norfolk State's 4x400 relay team of
Jahquan Christopher,
Dazon Harrison,
Jeremiah Zellander, and
Devin Mosley finished fifth with a time of 3:22.48. It marked a four-second improvement from the Spartans' showing at the VCU Rams Indoor Invitational (3:26.93) earlier in the season.
Â
Making his first appearance since the 2020-21 season,
Rayquan Smith got his 2022-23 campaign off to a powerful start. The redshirt junior achieved personal records in both the shot put (46-0.75) and weight throw (44-10.75) on Saturday.
