Spartans Blow Past Radford for Third Consecutive Road Victory

| By:
Box Score RADFORD, Va. – The Norfolk State women's basketball team (3-0) outscored Radford (2-1) 41-23 in the second half, cruising to the team's third consecutive road victory to start the season with a 70-46 result.

NSU freshman D'Brya Clark led the Spartans with 16 points off the bench, shooting a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. She added seven rebounds as well, her second game with six or more boards this season.

As a team, Norfolk State went 15-of-16 (93.8 percent) from the charity stripe. It marked the first time NSU has shot over 93.0 percent from the free throw line (min. 10 made) in a game in over a decade.

Kierra Wheeler contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, while Makoye Diawara hauled in a team-high nine rebounds – five of her boards coming at the offensive end.

Both teams struggled to find a groove offensively to start the game, going three minutes scoreless as strong defenses prevailed. Radford's Terissa Lavoile-Brice broke the stalemate with a floater through the lane, but Crystal White responded right back with a deep 3-pointer.

Clark made an immediate impact after checking in, slicing through the lane for an and-one layup. Niya Fields found Skye Robinson in the paint for two points to push NSU ahead 10-5, but Radford scored on back-to-back possessions to tie things up.

Da'Naijah Williams knocked down a 3-pointer and Anjanae Richardson finished a crafty layup to give Norfolk State a 15-10 lead after one quarter.

Radford started the second period on a 5-0 run to knot the game back up, but Richardson responded with a quick 3-pointer to push NSU back in front.

The Spartans went on a 7-4 run in the final minutes of the first half, including a nothing-but-net 3-pointer from Niya Fields to take a 29-23 advantage into the break.

The third quarter saw a much quicker emergence of scoring, contrasting the start of the first half. Diawara drained a pair of 3-pointers, before Da'Naijah Williams sunk one from behind the arc to increase Norfolk State's lead to 13.

As the Spartans began to separate, they began to take advantage of desperation attempts from the Highlanders. The defense remained steady, while Fields and White drained 3-pointers to push the Spartan advantage to 17.

Clark swiped a slow pass and made the layup on the other end midway through the fourth quarter, then came up with another steal-and-score on Radford's next possession. Clark and her fellow freshman teammate Richardson added paint finishes in the final minutes, putting the final touches on Norfolk State's third victory of the season.
