Norfolk State Notes
Â
After a blazing hot start to conference play, Norfolk State has hit a small bump in the road with back-to-back losses last weekend. The Spartans were swept by Maryland Eastern Shore, before falling 3-1 to Delaware State on the road.
Â
A young roster, Norfolk State is led by freshman outside hitter
Gabrielle Gilbert, who ranks second in the MEAC with 3.66 kills per set, only behind defending MEAC Player of the Year Rya McKinnon of Howard.
Â
Sophomore
Sydney McCree facilitated the Spartan attack, posting 8.08 assists per set. NSU senior
Shonte Seale puts pressure on opposing defenses as well, averaging 2.86 kills per set.
Â
Coppin State Notes
Â
Standing in first place with an unblemished conference record, Coppin State (20-3, 10-0 MEAC) has dominated opponents with a combination of aggressive attacks and poised defensive play. The Eagles handed NSU its first loss of MEAC play, a 3-0 result at Gill Gymnasium.
Â
To avenge that loss, the Spartans will have to slow down the tandem of TaKenya Stafford and Ammaarah Williams, averaging 3.48 and 3.44 kills per set, respectively. Laila Ibrahim has proved extremely efficient on her swings, posting a league-best .369 hitting percentage.
Â
Andrea Tsvetanova leads the MEAC with 9.65 assists per set, while also owning a conference-best rate of 0.64 service aces per set. Ashley Roman leads the MEAC with 4.54 digs per set.
Â
Morgan State Notes
Norfolk State handled Morgan State (7-18, 2-8) gracefully at Gill Gymnasium earlier this year, earning a 3-1 victory on its home floor.
Â
The Bears are powered by a strong net presence. Jada Williams leads the MEAC wih 1.07 blocks per set, while Justyus Jackson is close behind at 0.77. Ainara Fernandes ranks second in the conference with 0.55 service aces per set.
