Box Score NORFOLK, Va. -- The Norfolk State University softball team claimed the 2-1 series victory against the Bison of Howard University after winning a Sunday matinee game 11-3 in five innings at the NSU Softball Field in Norfolk, Va.
Two high-scoring innings for the Spartans pushed NSU ahead of the Bison to claim an 11-3 victory in five innings.
Senior pitcher
Cam Andersen collected the win throwing 4.1 innings during which she gave up three runs on one hit and striking out four batters. Designated player
Loren Hudson went 2-of-3 at the plate while right fielder
Yrral Davis went 1-of-3 at the plate while driving in two RBI and scoring twice.
Norfolk State put six runs on the board in the bottom of the second to go up early over Howard.
Lily Potter scored during
Yrral Davis' at-bat as she reached base on an error by second base. A sac groundout to third base by
Imani Moore scored
Victoria Taylor who pinch ran for
Cam Andersen for the second run of the inning.
Alison Guckin and Davis came home on a sacfly by
Rylie Gilbreath to right field putting the score at 4-0. The final two runs came home on a Potter at-bat when she reached on a fielding error by the pitcher that scored
Gabby Vaughan and
Kenna Higa to put the score at 6-0.
Howard answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning as the pair of runners came home on a fielding error by Vaughan at first. The Bison closed the gap to three runs in the top of the fifth as the catcher hit a single to left field to send the runner across home plate.
The Spartans added five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go ahead by eight runs over the Bison winning by run-rule 11-3. Davis came in big again hitting a double to left center that send in
Brierra Tyler to start the scoring rally. A single down the leftfield line by Moore scored
Emree Sky Obispo, while Davis came home on an error during Gilbreath's at-bat that put the score at 9-3. Vaughan came to the plate and drove in
Victoria Ruiz on a sac groundout to the shortstop.
Jade Dixon came in clutch at the end hitting a single to left field that dropped between three Bison sending in Higa and Gilbreath for the last two runs needed to give the Spartans an eight-run lead.
Norfolk State returns to the field again on Wednesday, March 22, when they travel across the bay to take on the Pirates of Hampton University. First pitch time of the midweek doubleheader is set for 1 & 3 PM.
