Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. -- The Norfolk State University softball team split its doubleheader against the Pirates of Hampton University at the NSU Softball Field in Norfolk, Va. NSU won game one 5-2 while Hampton claimed game two 7-4.
Hampton opened the day with a solo homerun in the first inning and added a second run to their total in the top of the third taking a 2-0 lead. Norfolk State answered with four runs in the bottom of the third taking a two-run lead and scored the fifth run in the fifth inning for the final run of the game.
A pair of singles, a double steal, and an RBI groundout were the plays that drove in the four runs for the Spartans in the third. Recording RBI's were
Gabby Vaughan,
Cam Andersen, and
Lauren Sheehan, while
Alison Guckin,
Victoria Taylor,
TC Watson, and
Kenna Higa all crossed home plate for NSU in the third.
The last run to score for Norfolk State in game one was
Gabby Vaughan in the fifth inning as Sheehan hit a sac fly to right field. To lead off the inning, Vaughan hit a double to left field that put her in sole ownership of the NSU Softball Program record for career doubles at 40.
Game two saw the Spartans get on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the second.
Victoria Taylor and
Jade Dixon scored as
Lauren Sheehan reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman.
Hampton got hot in the fourth and fifth innings posting seven runs between the two frames with a pair of runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead.
NSU added two last runs in the bottom of the seventh as
Rylie Gilbreath singled to the pitcher and advanced on the throw while
Victoria Ruiz and Guckin scored on the play.
Norfolk State hits the road for the next eight games starting with a road trip down to Cary, NC to face the Eagles of North Carolina Central University. The three game series begins on Saturday with games at 1 PM and 3 PM and concludes Sunday at 12 PM.
