CARY, N.C. -- The Norfolk State University softball team split its doubleheader against the Eagles of North Carolina Central University at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C. on Sunday afternoon. NSU won game one 3-1 while NCCU claimed game two 4-3.

Game one began with the Eagles posting a single run in the bottom of the first inning while holding the Spartans scoreless through the first three innings.

Norfolk State evened the score up at one all in the top of the third inning as thirdbaseman Kenna Higa hit a home run, her fifth of the season, down the right field line.

After scoring their run in the first inning, NCCU was held scoreless the remainder of the game, while NSU pulled ahead to claim the 3-1 victory with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

A pair of Spartan singles, one each from Loren Hudson and Jade Dixon, drove in the runs scored by Higa and Cam Andersen for the win.

Game two was another very closely contested games with both teams held scoreless through the opening three innings. The Eagles broke onto the board in the bottom of the fourth with a trio of runs scored putting them ahead 3-0.

Norfolk State made its way on to the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning as firstbaseman Gabby Vaughan hit a two-run homer over the left field wall driving in TC Watson on the play. The home run was Vaughan's sixth of the season.

North Carolina Central added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth putting the Eagles back ahead by two runs, with limited time remaining for the Spartans. NSU in the top of the seventh sent Lily Potter across home plate on a groundout by Yrral Davis. Morgan Johnson was in position at third base to tie the game, however the last out was recorded before she could come home as NC Central won game two, 4-3.

The Spartans are off for a week before hitting the road next weekend, heading up to Dover, Delaware and the Hornets Nest to face Delaware State Unviersity for a three-game series.
