Box Score CARY, N.C. - The Norfolk State softball team fell to the Eagles of North Carolina Central 2-1 on Thursday afternoon in a rescheduled midweek MEAC conference game at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.
The Spartans opened the game by loading the bases in the first inning but could not manage to send a runner home. The Eagles in the bottom half of the inning put two runners on but also left their runners stranded as neither team found a run in the opening frame.
After a three-up, three-down second inning for both teams, NSU was able to get three runners on the bags again in the top of the third, but much like the first inning left the runners stranded. NCCU also mimicked their first inning getting runners on the bases but left them in place heading into the fourth.
Over the next two innings, only the Spartans managed to get a runner on base as
Yrral Davis singled to right field, but the bats were cold on both sides as the teams remained scoreless through five innings.
Norfolk State in the top of the sixth sent a runner across home plate as
Lily Potter rounded for home on
Jade Dixon single putting the Spartans up 1-0.
NSU held NCCU off the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning while leaving a runner on the bags in the top of the seventh and needed just three outs to claim the win.
The Eagles put two runners on the bases after a pair of singles got through the infield. A groundout advanced the runners to second and third putting them in scoring position, and one final single sent the runners home for the walk-off Eagle victory.
NSU returns home to the NSU Softball Field this weekend, April 29-30, when they host the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore for the final MEAC series of the regular season. Game times are set for 1 PM and 3 PM on Saturday and 12 PM on Sunday, however, those times are subject to change based on inclement weather.
