Box Score CARY, N.C. — Norfolk State senior Federico Rebecchini earned an singles impressive victory in straight sets as No. 1 seeded South Carolina State eliminated the No. 5 seed Spartans 4-1 in the MEAC Tournament Semifinals.
Like the previous day, inclement weather moved the match indoors, with the top three players in the lineup opening singles play on the only three available courts.
Playing the last match of his collegiate career, Rebecchini went out in style at the No. 1 position. The senior put together one of his best performances of the season, defeating Aissa Benchakroun 7-5, 6-0 to put the Spartans on the board.
With the victory, Rebecchini closed out his career with three straight wins at No. 1 singles, all in a span of four days. He won 6-2, 6-3 against North Carolina A&T on Tuesday to wrap up the regular season, before picking up singles victories against Howard and South Carolina State in the MEAC Tennis Championships. He also won the clinching doubles match on Thursday alongside Adam Kaczmarek.
Kaczmarek and Ibrahim Abbas retired from their matches due to injuries, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage. Pedro Sasso defeated Saadiq Hinton 6-1, 6-0, extending the lead to 3-1.
Boris Lunin and Benjamin Niv dueled with immense power and precision at the No. 5 slot, but the South Carolina State sophomore prevailed 6-2, 6-4 for the clinching point.
