NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State sophomore
Gidion Sigei was named Men's Track Athlete of the Week by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
The distance runner performed spectacularly at the historic Penn Relays last weekend, finishing the 5,000 meters in 14 minutes, 11.64 seconds. The time set a personal record for Sigei.
Â
The mark was the fastest of any MEAC student-athlete in the event this season, 26 seconds ahead of the next closest time, belonging to teammate
Victor Jumo. Sigei finished just over one second from a top-three performance in MEAC history for the event.
Â
Sigei and the Spartans will meet the rest of their conference competition next week for the highly anticipated 2023 MEAC Outdoor Track Championships. The meet will be hosted by Norfolk State at William "Dick" Price Stadium, as the Spartans look for their second consecutive MEAC outdoor title.
