Norfolk State’s Gilbert named MEAC Volleyball Rookie of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. - Freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Gilbert of Norfolk State women's volleyball was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.  

The Indianapolis, Indiana native tallied a total of 44 kills over the weekend including a season and career high 22 in the five-set victory over UNC Wilmington. The day before, Gilbert collected her previous best, 16 kills, in a five-set match against Alabama State.  

Gilbert's hitting percentage for the weekend was an impressive 0.311 after putting down 44 kills on 106 attack attempts with 11 errors at the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Classic. Additionally, Gilbert served up two aces, added 11 digs, made two blocks while contributing 47.0 points for the Spartans over the weekend.  

Norfolk State is back in action this weekend as the team heads up to Charlottesville, Va., to compete at the Jefferson Cup Invitational hosted by the University of Virginia. George Washington University and Wofford College will face off at 4:30 PM while NSU will take on the hosting UVA Cavaliers on Friday evening at 7 PM. Day two's format will pit the winning teams from Friday against each other at 2:30 PM, while the two non-winning teams will face off at 12 PM.
