Aggies Defeat Spartans 4-3 with Strong Singles Showing

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team suffered another narrow loss on Thursday, as North Carolina A&T defeated the Spartans 4-3 at Piedmont Indoor Tennis on Thursday.
 
The Spartans (5-7) remain consistently competitive in every match they play, with their last four losses coming as 4-3 results.
 
The Spartans won the opening doubles point, getting the day started effectively.  Boris Lunin and Deniz Okyay won 6-1 at the No. 1 position, before Fred McRae and Vladisav Gorbatenko clinched the point with a 6-3 victory on Court 3.
 
North Carolina A&T stepped up in singles play, starting with quick wins by Lucas Coupu-Moison and Ian Pederson at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively. Lunin got the Spartans going again with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the No. 6 slot.
 
Kaua Santos defeated Antoni Pankowski 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 5 position, but McRae earned his second win of the day with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 win on Court 4.
 
Vladisav Gorbatenko played two back-and-forth sets with Esteban Lopez at the No. 1 slot, but the Aggie graduate student eventually earned a 6-4, 7-5 win.
 
The Spartans remain in North Carolina for the upcoming MEAC Tennis Roundup at Cary Tennis Park.
