NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team dropped its first two conference games of the season on Friday afternoon, falling 10-2 and 8-3 to Central Connecticut State.
Saturday's weather forecast forced a doubleheader to take place on Friday between the programs. The Spartans and Blue Devils began their first game at 12 p.m., wrapping up the second matchup after 6 p.m.
Central Connecticut State got three runs on the board in the first inning of the day, pouring in four more runs in the fifth inning for a commanding lead.
A two-run home by
Justin Journette gave the Spartans life, but CCSU responded with a long ball in the next half inning. The Blue Devils fended off a pair of baserunners in the ninth inning to close out their first win of the day.
After Central Connecticut State scored the first four runs of the afternoon's second game, Norfolk State began to fight back with two runs in the third inning.
Collin Curry launched a double to left center field to drive in one score, before
Kydese Queen ripped an RBI double down the leftfield line shortly after.
A two-run Blue Devil homer halted the Spartans' momentum. Queen continued his standout afternoon with a solo shot to left center, but NSU couldn't muster a comeback threat in the final innings.
