NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State Athletics Department is mourning the loss of former Spartan track & field student-athlete Katie Wright, who passed away this week at the age of 36.
An exceptional pole vaulter, Wright cemented herself as one of the program's top athletes during her time at Norfolk State. She currently holds the school's indoor record for the event, clearing a height of 11 feet, 3.75 inches on two occasions.
"Katie made a valuable impact to our women's track and field program on and off the track," NSU director of track & field programs
Kenneth Giles said. "She was a very team-oriented person and when she competed, she put NSU first. As the current school record holder, she will always be remembered in the NSU track and field archives. She will be missed."
A three-time MEAC champion in the pole vault, Wright's dominance at the collegiate level came after her decorated time at Princess Anne High School as a four-sport athlete.
Known for her larger-than-life personality and unwavering charisma, Wright pursued a remarkable career as an operations specialist in the United States Navy before her passing.
