Spartans Open up 2025 with Strong Showing at VCU Rams Indoor Invite

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The Norfolk State women's track and field team opened the 2025 portion of its schedule with a strong showing at the VCU Rams Indoor Invite on Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
 
Junior Brooklyn Robinson led the way for the Spartans, picking up a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.53. Sophomore Daena Dyer followed behind, taking sixth place in the same event (9.09).
 
Senior Jahmei Wyatt earned a second-place finish in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 2:19.41. The Spartans also saw a pair of top-five finishes in the 300 meters with Kadynce Taylor taking third place (40.73) while Autumn Burrell earned fifth place with a time of 40.97.
 
Redshirt senior Allysia Farrar competed in a pair of events, clocking a fifth-place time in the 200 meters (25.62) and a seventh-place finish in the 60 meters (7.77)
 
Norfolk State had a strong showing in distance events, with Leanna Lewis taking third place in the 1,000 meters (2:55.11). Sophomore Emani Thompson followed behind Lewis, taking seventh place in the same event (3:10.96).
 
Abigael Chebet rounded out the Spartans in distance events with a sixth-place finish in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:45.20.
 
Rounding out the running events the team of Kadynce Taylor, Kalyncia Taylor, Farrar, and Lewis finished in third place in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:55.33.
 
In field events, thrower Leslie Young earned a second-place finish in the weight throw (54-3.75) and third place in the shot put (41-7).
 
Freshman Amanti Mayes also competed in the shot put, reaching a mark of 38-4 to place seventh.
 
 Sophomore Aniah Kennerson recorded a leap of five feet, three inches in the high jump, taking third place.
 
Norfolk State will return to action at the HBCU Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 18 in New York, N.Y.
