Norfolk State Announces 2025 Softball Schedule

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State University head softball coach Angie Nicholson announced the team's 2025 schedule, headlined by three tournaments, with two at the NSU Softball Field.

Nicholson enters her first season as head coach of the Spartans after three seasons as head coach at Georgia State. She enters the 2025 season with a 478-469 (.505) career record.

Seven infielders, five pitchers, four outfielders and two utility players return for the Spartans, while welcoming in seven newcomers. Key returners include pitchers Emma Zieg and Brierra Tyler, infielder Julia Kearney, outfielder Lauren Sheehan, and utility player Aniyah Michalak.

Zieg pitched a team best 3.30 ERA through 46.2 innings, while Tyler led the team in strikeouts (48). Kearney batted .254 in 29 appearances accumulating 18 hits, six runs, and eight RBIs in her freshman season.

Sheehan made 13 pitching appearances, with 42 starts in left field, pitching a 4.35 ERA in 27.1 innings pitched. Michalak led the team in runs scored (16).

"The ladies have been really working hard and have been nothing but receptive and willing to learn," Nicholson said. "I am really looking forward to putting things together this spring and eager to see how much fight they really have in them!"

The 2025 season opens on Feb. 15-16 in a series against Mercyhurst and Saint Peter's as the Spartans start the season with 12 consecutive home games.

The Spartans host four institutions in two home tournaments: the Spartan/Pirate Invite and Spartan/Pirate Challenge.

The Spartan/Pirate Invite brings Mount St. Mary's and St. Bonaventure to Norfolk, Va. from Feb. 21-22 and the Spartan/Pirate Challenge invites UMass Lowell and South Dakota from Feb. 28-Mar. 1.

"Being able to host means a great deal to our athletes being able to sleep in their own beds and avoid the constraints of travel." Nicholson said. "We get to play on our own territory in front of family, friends, and fans! Who wouldn't love that!"

Notable opponents this season include games against North Carolina, Mercyhurst, and South Dakota for the first time in school history. The North Carolina game is set for Apr. 23 in Chapel Hill, N.C. at Anderson Softball Field.

"There is no particular game or opponent we are looking forward to, but really it's just getting out there each day and competing against ourselves and leaving it all out on the field," Nicholson said. "I think that's what I am looking forward to seeing."

Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play begins on Mar. 15-16 in a series against South Carolina State. Nicholson, who coached at Hampton from 2017-2020, currently holds a 28-8 MEAC record. She posted a 17-1 MEAC record in 2017 to garner a first-place finish in the Northern Division in her first season.

The season ends in a series against Howard from Apr. 26-27, with the later date marking Senior Day for a 12 p.m. start.

The 2025 MEAC Softball Championship is slated for May 7-10 in Norfolk, Va.
