Norfolk State Closes Regular Season Against Howard

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State volleyball team will wrap up its 2025 regular season on Friday, Nov. 24, hosting Howard at Gill Gymnasium. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 
Friday's matchup will also serve as Senior Day, as the Spartans honor their three seniors — Ryan Nored, Mya Wood, and Sydney McCree — prior to the contest.
 
About Norfolk State
The Spartans enter Friday's match with a 5-22 overall record and a 3-10 mark in MEAC play, coming off three wins last week against Hampton (3-1), South Carolina State (3-0), and North Carolina Central (3-2).
 
Junior outside hitter Gabrielle Gilbert earned MEAC Player of the Week honors after a standout performance. She posted a career-high 26 kills against Hampton and led the team in kills against SCSU and NCCU.
 
Gilbert leads NSU with 382 kills and a .205 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Jasmine Mataira has tallied 375 assists, while Gilbert (37) and Briana Ellis (31) lead the team in service aces.
 
On defense, Mary Nahinu paces the team with 274 digs, followed by Wood with 212. Ava Berry anchors the net with 82 blocks, supported by Reagan Chisholm (55) and Gilbert (45).
 
About Howard
Howard enters Friday's match 15-9 overall and 9-4 in MEAC play. The Bison swept last weekend's conference slate, defeating North Carolina Central 3-0 and South Carolina State 3-1.
 
Claire Simpson and Leah Reeves earned MEAC weekly honors this week, with Simpson named Defensive Player of the Week and Reeves recognized as Setter of the Week.
 
Senior outside hitter Rya McKinnon leads the Bison with 383 kills, followed by Alexys James (214) and Zenai Jethroe (198). Reeves directs the offense with 918 assists, while James contributes 120. At the service line, Reeves (40), James (35), and Buckner (30) lead the team.
 
Defensively, Simpson leads the Bison with 299 digs, followed by McKinnon (195) and Buckner (177). Jethroe anchors the front line with 84 blocks, while Kaitlynn Robinson adds 62.

Norfolk State will compete next week in the MEAC Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Coppin State University. Match time and opponent will be announced following the conclusion of the regular season.
