Spartans Drop Battle of the Bay against Hampton 57-55

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State women's basketball team dropped a 57–55 battle to Hampton in the annual Battle of the Bay on Friday evening at Echols Hall.
 
Norfolk State fell to 2–5, while Hampton improved to 2–2.
 
Jasha Clinton led NSU with 12 points on 5-of-15 shooting, adding six assists, five rebounds, and four steals. The Spartans outrebounded the Pirates 41–35, but Hampton forced 19 NSU turnovers while committing 13.
 
Norfolk State opened the night on a 9–2 run, capped by a LeAire Nicks 3-pointer. Hampton answered out of the media timeout with an 11–2 spurt to take a 13–11 lead into the second quarter.
 
Cire Worley sparked the Spartans early in the second with an and-one, regaining the lead. NSU followed with an 8–0 run to push the margin to 22–13. Hampton climbed back within three before Niyah Gaston finished a drive at the rim. The Pirates scored consecutive baskets to close the half, but NSU held a 24–23 edge at the break.
 
Clinton opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, and Ciara Bailey added a free throw and an and-one finish to make it 32–27. Anjanae Richardson knocked down a jumper as the teams traded baskets through the middle stretch. Gaston later hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 10, before Hampton trimmed it to nine entering the fourth.
 
Hampton controlled the first five minutes of the final period, going on a 15–2 run to take a 49–45 lead and force an NSU timeout with 5:53 remaining. Bailey ended the surge with a layup, but Hampton extended the margin to eight in the final minute. The Spartans forced three straight turnovers and turned them into six points, cutting the deficit to two. NSU had one final possession to force overtime, but Hampton came up with a stop to win the game 57-55.
