Spartans Set for Nonconference Showdown with Shaw

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State women's basketball team returns to Echols Hall this evening for a 6 p.m. matchup with Shaw.
 
The Spartans (2-6) look to get back in the win column, while the Bears (2-3) play their third game in as many days after defeating Lincoln (Pa.) and falling narrowly to Virginia State.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
Norfolk State leads the all-time series 20-4 and earned a 90-57 victory over Shaw last season at Echols Hall.
  • NSU has won the last four meetings between the programs.
  • Shaw's last win came during the 1995-96 season (77-61).
  • Tonight's matchup marks only the second meeting since the 1996-97 season.
 
SCOUTING SHAW
Shaw enters the matchup after a busy stretch last week, earning wins over Virginia Lynchburg (68-57) and Lincoln (Pa.) (61-57). The Bears dropped a one-point game to Virginia State on Monday (67-66), moving to 2-3.
  • Shaw averages 61.6 points per game and allows 65.8.
  • The Bears shoot 34.3 percent from the field and 30 percent from 3-point range.
  • Senior forward D'Ayzha Atkinson leads Shaw with 19.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.
  • Senior guard Leasia Matthews adds 13.0 points per game.
  • Interim head coach Lou Hamilton is in his first season leading the program and his third season on staff.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Norfolk State fell to App State 66-38 last week in Boone, N.C. Da'Brya Clark paced the Spartans with 14 points, three assists and two steals.
  • Anjanae Richardson scored eight points.
  • Cire Worley grabbed a team-high six rebounds; Jasha Clinton and Diamond Bailey each added four.
  • Norfolk State shot 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) from the free-throw line.
  • The Spartans forced 18 turnovers but committed 20.
  • App State held a 20-4 edge in points off turnovers.
 
SCOUTING NORFOLK STATE
Norfolk State looks to snap a five-game skid and plays one more home game in 2025, hosting Dillard on Dec. 11.
  • Graduate guard Jasha Clinton ranks fifth nationally in total steals (32) and eighth in steals per game (4.0).
  • NSU leads the MEAC in blocks (33) and ranks second in total steals (104).
  • Three Spartans average double figures: Clinton (13.4), Clark (11.3) and Richardson (10.3).
  • Carmen Kweti leads NSU on the boards with 6.9 rebounds per game and adds 1.6 blocks per contest.
