Spartans Battle, Unable to Overcome Wagner in 4-3 Result

Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team took another close loss on its record on Saturday, falling 4-3 at Wagner.
 
The Seahawks (2-3) won the opening doubles point against the Spartans (1-3), the factor that ultimately put Wagner in the victory column. Boris Lunin and Michele Elia earned a 6-2 win at the No. 3 slot, but the home team responded with triumphs on Court 1 (6-3) and Court 2 (7-6) to go up 1-0.
 
Jakub Solarski evened the match 1-1 by defeating Pablo Rodriguez Gonzalez 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 position, before Carlos Rodriguez Gonzalez put the Seahawks back in front with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Vladisav Gorbatenko on Court 1.
 
Deniz Okyay continued his strong start to the 2025 campaign, pulling out a thrilling 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3 victory over Damian Janiszewski at the No. 3 position. The back-and-forth battle continued, as Vibhu Challagundla bested Elia 6-2, 6-4 at position No. 5.
 
Frederick McRae kept the Spartans alive, taking down Jordan Hunte 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 4 slot. The match came down to the sixth and final position, between Joshua Zhao and Lunin. The Spartan senior battled to the end, but Zhao came away with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win, securing the victory for Wagner.
 
Norfolk State returns to action on Sunday at 6 p.m. against Fordham.
