Spartans Pour in Individual Victories at Bill Carson Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C.  – The Norfolk State men's track and field team continued its strong start to the outdoor season over the weekend, racking up seven victories at the Bill Carson Invitational, hosted by East Carolina University.
 
Norfolk State spread the wealth over the course of the meet, picking up individual wins from six different student-athletes in addition to a team relay triumph.
 
Norfolk State's distance group set the tone on Friday, sweeping the top four spots in the 1500 meters. Victor Jumo won the event in 3:51.11, while Gidion Sigei (3:51.68), Brian Rotich (3:57.47) and Lewis Too (3:59.85) followed closely behind.
 
Tafari Bishop won the 400-meter hurdles on Friday with a time of 51.91, while Premier Wynn took second in 52.26. Kendrick Winfield also earned runner-up honors in the 200 meters (20.75), while Kristopher Stephens placed fourth in the long jump (22-9).
 
Landon Walker got the Spartans going on Friday with a victory in the pole vault, clearing a height of 15 feet, 1.0 inch. Andwele Shurland (12-11.5) earned second in the same event.
 
Norfolk State's distance crew dominated the 5000 meters, headlined by a win from Sigei in 14:59.74. Rotich nabbed second in 15:02.94, while Too finished fourth (15:17.53).
 
Norfolk State picked up another victory in the 4x400 meter relay on Saturday after earning the top-time in the nation last weekend, as Jahquan Christopher, Devin Mosley, Donovan Terry, and Vincent Bond Jr. completed the race in 3:14.66.
 
Bond put together an individual triumph in the 400 meters, winning the event in 45.91 seconds. Winfield placed second (46.31) while Lavontay Bond earned fifth (48.50).
 
Jayden Gordon claimed the triple jump crown with a mark of 47 feet, 1.0 inch, while Stephens placed second (45-10). Chadzen Wilson earned runner-up honors in the high jump (6-2.75).

Atrell Williams led the Norfolk State throwers, placing fifth in the shot put (52-1.75).
 
The Spartans return to the track on Saturday, Apr. 5, hosting the NSU Invitational at William "Dick" Price Stadium.
