GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's track and field team put together a strong showing over the weekend at the Bill Carson Invitational, hosted by East Carolina University.
Leanna Lewis got the meet going with a victory in the 1500 meters, finishing the race in four minutes, 40.49 seconds. The Spartans dominated the event, landing
Mercyline Kimaiyo in second (4:40.61),
Jahmei Wyatt in fourth (4:42.86),
Abigael Chebet in fifth (4:43.65), and
Emani Thompson in sixth (4:48.18).
Kalyncia Taylor won the 200 meters with a time of 24.17 seconds, followed closely behind by
Kadynce Taylor (24.25).
Asiah Wike (24.36) placed fourth.
Brooklyn Robinson earned runner-up honors in the long jump (18-1.75), while
Daena Dyer placed second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.06).
The Spartans kept the momentum going on Saturday, starting with an impressive performance from Robinson in the 100 meter hurdles. The junior finished first of collegiate runners in the event, completing the race in 11.69 seconds.
Robinson followed her victory up with a runner-up showing in the 100 meters (11.69), followed by third-place
Brandy Hall (11.78) and fourth-place Wike (11.82).
Lewis won the 800 meters in 2:10.44, moments before
Jahmei Wyatt took second (2:12.20).
Sonia Koech took third in the 5,000 meters (18:27.70) with Chebet earning fourth (18:45.86).
Norfolk State's 4x400 meter relay team of
Autumn Burrell, Wike, Dyer, and Wyatt placed second, completing the event in 3:53.56.
The Spartans return to the track on Saturday, Apr. 5, hosting the NSU Invitational at William "Dick" Price Stadium.
