NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State freshman
Yuliya Yurkova picked up the first conference accolades of her career on Thursday, sweeping the MEAC Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week awards.
Yurkova's accolades come after strong performances in three Norfolk State matches, facing Chowan, Maryland, and Longwood. The Spartans went 1-2 as a team, but Yurkova went 2-0 in singles play.
Playing the No. 1 singles position against Chowan, Yurkova defeated Feidi Rodriguez 6-0, 6-4 to help the Spartans earn a 4-0 home victory. After her singles match against Maryland went unfinished, she cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Longwood's Filine van Eijkelenburg at the No. 1 slot.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday afternoon, facing Hampton on the road.
