DURHAM, N.C. --- The Norfolk State men's track and field team continued its strong season over the weekend, taking down a meet record in the 4x400 meter relay at the Duke Invitational from Apr. 10-12.
The 4x400 meter relay team consisting of
Tafari Bishop,
Premier Wynn,
Kendrick Winfield, and
Vincent Bond Jr. clocked a historic time of 3:07.03 to take first place. The time brought down the meet record that NSU set last season at the Duke Invitational (3:07.88).
Sophomore
Christopher Basking earned the only individual win at the meet, clocking a time of 10.48 to win the 100 meters. Basking also took sixth in the 200 meters, finishing with a time of 21.24.
Julian Ward followed in 11th (21.48), while
Donovan Terry placed 18th (21.65), and
Antoinne Smith took 20th (21.68).
The Spartans put together a strong performance in the 400 meters led by Wynn in second (46.38), Winfield in third (46.73), and Bond in fifth (46.89). Terry clocked a time of 48.53 to place 28th, while
Lavontay Bond took 36th in the same event (48.96).
Norfolk State's 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Smith, Ward, Terry, and Basking earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 40.75.
The Spartans earned a pair of top 15 finishes led by
Gidion Sigei taking 13th in the 5,000 meters (14:24.83) and
Jahquan Christopher placing 14th in the 400-meter hurdles (53.48).
The NSU distance team clocked two top 20 finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with
Lewis Too earning 16th (9:27.31) and
Basil Koech taking 17th (9:28.42).
Senior
Victor Jumo took 55th in a field of over 130 athletes in the 1,500 meters (3:53.78). Jumo also took 56th place in a field of over 100 runners in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 1:54.09.
Freshman
Jaymes Saunders led NSU in field events, taking fourth in high jump group B (16-1.25).
Jayden Gordon took ninth in the triple jump, with a leap of 46 feet, 9.25 inches, while Kristopher Stevens claimed 13th (45-7.75).
Atrell Williams led the Norfolk State throwers, placing 22nd in the shot put (48-0.25), while
Landon Walker placed 11th in pole vault group B (14-3.25).
Norfolk State returns to action at the UVA Challenge from Apr. 18-19 in Charlottesville, Va.
