DURHAM, N.C. --- The Norfolk State women's track and field team put together a strong performance against top track & field programs at the Duke Invitational from Apr. 10-12.
Leanna Lewis picked up the Spartans' lone win of the weekend in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 2:06.58.
Jahmei Wyatt followed with a time of 2:11.65.
The Spartans 4x100 relay team consisting of
Kailie Borque,
Kadynce Taylor,
Brandy Hall, and
Brooklyn Robinson placed third, clocking a time of 46.14.
Robinson put together a top 10 performance in the 100-meter hurdles, placing sixth (13.62).
Kadynce Taylor led NSU in the 400 meters, taking 12th with a time of 54.79, while
Autumn Burrell took 39th place (57.24).
Abigael Chebet placed 35th in a field of 80 runners in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:28.44. Senior
Mercyline Kimaiyo followed in 37
th (12:30.10), while
Sonia Koech placed 52nd (17:54.44).
Borque led NSU in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 25.30 while
Zayre Floyd followed with a time of 25.83.
The Spartans capped off running events with a fifth-place finish from the 4x400 relay team consisting of
Kadynce Taylor, Burrell, Wyatt, and Lewis (3:41.89).
Norfolk State also saw success in the field, led by
Jaya Jones taking fifth in the shot put (37-7.25). She also took 24th place in the javelin (95-3).
Essence Shaw also recorded a top 10 finish in group B of the high jump with a leap of five meters, 1.25 inches.
Fresh off receiving MEAC Field Athlete of the Week honors,
Leslie Young put together three strong performances, including the 24
th place hammer throw (161-6), 18th in discus throw (130-4), and 16
th in javelin throw (119-4).
Norfolk State returns to action at the UVA Challenge from Apr. 18-19 in Charlottesville, Va.
