No. 2 Seed Spartans Set for 2025 MEAC Softball Championships

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State softball team, led by first year head coach Angie Nicholson, enters the postseason looking to win the program's first ever Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship title.
 
The Spartans (21-21, 14-7 MEAC) come into the 2025 MEAC Softball Championship as the No. 2 seed after earning a first-round bye. Norfolk State will face the winner of the No. 3 Delaware State vs No. 6 South Carolina State matchup on Wednesday, May 7.

Norfolk State's first game is set to begin at 5 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field.

Norfolk State defeated South Carolina State in two of the three matchups this season, splitting a pair of matchups on Mar. 15 before winning the series with a 7-5 victory on Mar. 16.

The Spartans swept Delaware State in the three regular season meetings this season, defeating the Hornets twice on Mar. 29, completing the series with a 3-2 win on Mar. 30.

Norfolk State has produced the best single-season turnarounds in Division I program history, finishing the regular season with a 21-21 record. The Spartans went from 4-43 in 2024 to 21-21 in 2025, a 17-win increase heading into the postseason.

  • Qween Edmonds is one of the best newcomers in the MEAC this season. She is hitting .348 for the year to go along with 47 hits, 12 RBIs, 22 runs, and 68 total bases. The two-time MEAC Player of the Week selection is second in the MEAC in hits and triples (5).
  • Kailey Bryant enters her second season as a force for the Spartans, hitting .323 on the season. She leads the team in triples (6), RBIs (22), and slugging percentage (.504). 
  • Amaya McPherson tallied nine wins in 23 appearances for the Spartans in 15 starts. McPherson has a 3.09 ERA with eight complete games, two shutouts, allowing 126 hits, 37 earned runs in 107.2 innings pitched. She is a three-time MEAC Rookie of the Week nominee
  • Norfolk State shattered its single-season stolen bases record of 111 set in '98 in the 6-5 win over Coppin State on April 19
  • Norfolk State leads the MEAC in stolen bases (128) and enters the postseason ninth in the country in stolen bases per game (2.81)

  • Single-game passes are $12

MEAC sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average (GPA), as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year, are eligible for All-Academic accolades.
