BALTIMORE, Md. – The Norfolk State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Coppin State on Sunday afternoon in MEAC play at PEC Arena.
Despite the setback, senior setter Sydney McCree reached a career milestone, moving into second place on the Spartans' all-time assists list. McCree tallied 17 assists in the match, bringing her career total to 2,437 and surpassing Nicole Kessner's mark of 2,424.
Gabrielle Gilbert paced the Spartan offense with 10 kills, while also adding two service aces, two blocks, and five digs. Ava Berry provided three blocks at the net, and Mary Nahinu anchored the defense with 10 digs.
The opening set featured several momentum swings. After Coppin State jumped ahead 12-8, Norfolk State rallied with a 6-1 run to take a 14-13 advantage, highlighted by a pair of aces from Jasmine Mataira and kills from Gilbert and Reagan Chisholm. The Spartans held a 17-15 lead, but the Eagles responded with a late surge to secure the frame 25-21.
Coppin State carried its momentum into the second set, building a 13-5 lead. Norfolk State battled back with a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to 14-12, but the Eagles used another extended run to close out the set 25-17.
In the third, the Spartans briefly led 5-4 before Coppin State strung together a 7-1 spurt to seize control. The Eagles went on to finish the match with a 25-13 victory.
Norfolk State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 3, traveling to Princess Anne, Md., to face the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
