NEW ORLEANS, La. — The Norfolk State women's tennis team dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to the University of New Orleans on March 2 at the Privateer Tennis Center in nonconference action.
New Orleans claimed the early momentum by securing the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. At No. 1 doubles, the Spartan pair of
Yuliya Yurkova and
Yana Klimchuk battled to a tiebreak but fell 7-6 (7-3) to Nouray Khaled and Kate Kalistratova. The Privateers also captured No. 2 doubles, where
Elena Martinez Prado and
Angelina Maniawska dropped a 6-2 decision to Danique Vermue and Fleur Sprengers. Norfolk State picked up a win at No. 3 doubles, as
Ines Sabadie and
Regina Urbiola defeated Naila Krifa and Ananya Dhankhar 6-4.
The Spartans responded in singles play with several strong performances across the lineup.
Regina Urbiola earned a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Kate Kalistratova 6-3, 6-3 to put Norfolk State on the board.
Norfolk State continued to battle as
Elena Martinez Prado secured another point with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Danique Vermue. The Spartans also received a victory from
Sabina Iurea at No. 6 singles, who defeated Ananya Dhankhar 6-3, 6-4.
The Privateers collected the remaining singles victories to clinch the match. At No. 1 singles, Fleur Sprengers defeated
Yuliya Yurkova 6-3, 6-3, while Nouray Khaled topped
Ines Sabadie 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. The decisive point came at No. 5 singles, where Naila Krifa edged
Yana Klimchuk in a tight match 7-6, 5-7, 10-8, sealing the 4-3 team victory for New Orleans.
