NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team continued its strong run through Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play with a 5-2 victory over Howard on Sunday at the ODU Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in MEAC play, adding another key conference victory at the MEAC Tennis Round Up.
Norfolk State set the tone early by claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights. The tandem of
Yuliya Yurkova and
Yana Klimchuk earned a 6-3 victory at the top spot, while
Regina Urbiola and
Angelina Maniawska secured the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
In singles play, the Spartans won four of six matches to clinch the team victory.
Yuliya Yurkova led the way at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win, while
Julia Daroszewska earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 position.
Regina Urbiola added another point at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-2 decision, and
Yana Klimchuk sealed the match at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
Howard managed to take two points in singles action, but Norfolk State's control at the top and middle of the lineup proved to be the difference.
