Spartans Host Morgan State for Senior Day Weekend

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team returns to TowneBank Field this weekend for its final home series of the 2026 regular season, hosting Morgan State in MEAC play.

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE 

Saturday, April 18 – vs. Morgan State (DH) | 1:30 & 3:30 p.m. 

Sunday, April 19 – vs. Morgan State | 12 p.m. 

SENIOR DAY  

Norfolk State will honor senior Maya Johnson prior to Saturday's doubleheader at TowneBank Field. A four-year member of the program, Johnson will be recognized for her impact on the program as a key contributor and leader in one of her final home appearances in Green and Gold. 

ABOUT NORFOLK STATE 

Norfolk State enters the weekend at 18-17 overall and 8-7 in MEAC play after a three-game series at Coppin State. 

AT THE PLATE 

The Spartans feature a deep, balanced lineup combining power, speed, and on-base ability. Maddy Morris leads the way, batting .364 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs while posting a 1.127 OPS. 

Kailey Bryant paces the team with 40 hits, adding 11 doubles, three triples, and 10 stolen bases, while Aniyah Michalak contributes a .320 average with 23 runs scored and 10 steals. 

In the middle, Bristyl Riddick (.326) has six home runs and 25 RBIs, while Maya Johnson adds five home runs and 19 RBIs. Qween Edmonds and Kachelle Refour provide steady production, and McKaley Kohn rounds out the lineup with consistent at-bats. 

IN THE CIRCLE 

Norfolk State's pitching staff is led by Maddy Morris, who owns an 8-5 record with a 1.84 ERA across 76.0 innings, adding five complete games, two shutouts, and a save. 

Kailey Bryant provides a reliable second option with a 3.48 ERA and 33 strikeouts, while Samantha Stevenson, Jaiden Henderson, and Amaya McPherson add depth, combining for over 100 innings and multiple key appearances. 

ABOUT MORGAN STATE 

Morgan State enters at 8-23 overall and 5-10 in MEAC play, currently on a six-game losing streak after series losses to Delaware State and Howard. 

Hunter Newman leads the offense with a .315 average, six home runs, and a .974 OPS, while Olivia Garner (.321) sets the tone at the top. Millie Cousins, Alison Keener, and Olivia Pagano add balance, combining contact hitting with patience and speed. 

In the circle, the Bears rely heavily on Millie Cousins and Serena Rodriguez, who have combined for over 175 innings pitched. Cousins leads the staff with a 5.10 ERA and 42 strikeouts, while Rodriguez adds experience with multiple complete games and a save. 

SERIES HISTORY 

Norfolk State holds a narrow 35-31 all-time edge over Morgan State in a series that dates back to 1994. The Spartans swept the 2025 regular season series, allowing just three total runs, including a 1-0 shutout in the finale.

Norfolk State closes the regular season on the road with a three-game series at Howard on April 25-26 in Washington, D.C. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 and 3 p.m., followed by a 12 p.m. game on Sunday.
