NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State volleyball team opens a three-match weekend at the UNCW Hampton Inn University Invitational on Friday, Sept. 11, in Wilmington, N.C. The Spartans face host UNC Wilmington at noon on Friday, meet Harvard at 4:30 p.m. that evening and close against UNC Asheville on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. All three matches will be played at Hanover Hall.

GILBERT ON THE DOORSTEP
Gabrielle Gilbert enters the weekend one kill from tying and two from passing Charlotte Armstead (2009-12) as Norfolk State's all-time career kills leader. Gilbert has 1,176 for her career; Armstead's program record of 1,177 has stood since 2012.
The senior has reached double figures in kills in all five matches this season and has never had fewer than 10 in a match in 2026, meaning the mark is likely to fall in Friday's opener against the Seahawks.
Gilbert already holds the program record for career attack attempts and pushed that total to 3,178 on Tuesday. She owns the single-season school records for kills (408 in 2024), kills per set (4.04 in 2024), attack attempts (1,193 in 2025), points (473.0 in 2024) and points per set (4.68 in 2024), along with the single-match record for attack attempts (73 vs. N.C. Central, 9/27/24). A three-time All-MEAC First Team selection, Gilbert was the 2023 MEAC Rookie of the Year and the 2024 VaSID State Player of the Year.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
Norfolk State is 2-3 after dropping a 3-0 decision to William & Mary on Tuesday in Gill Gymnasium. The Spartans hit .146 in the match while the Tribe finished at .340.
Gilbert leads Norfolk State with 64 kills (3.37 per set) and a team-high 79.5 points while hitting .213.
Kyleigh Moore ranks second with 52 kills and 63.0 points, followed by
Isis Castille with 27 and
Catori Crawford with 20.
Nehir Erimez directs the offense with 92 assists (4.84 per set), while
Jasmine Mataira has 59.
Jazeli Vandenburgh leads the defense with 77 digs (4.05 per set), and
Ava Berry tops the Spartans at the net with 24.0 blocks (1.26 per set), followed by
Briana Ellis with 13.0 and Castille with 10.0.
SERVE-AND-SERVE WEEKEND
Norfolk State leads Division I in service aces per set at 3.21, and every team in this weekend's field ranks among the national top 25. UNC Asheville is second at 3.04, Harvard is tied for third at 2.83 and host UNC Wilmington checks in 24th.
Ellis ranks 11th nationally in aces per set at 0.78 with a team-high 14, while Gilbert, Mataira and Vandenburgh are tied for 33rd at 0.63, each with 12. The Spartans have out-aced their opponents 61-46 and posted a season-high 25 aces in the five-set win over Hampton on Sept. 2.
ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS
UNC Wilmington carries a 3-4 record into the weekend it hosts. Sophomore Sam Vanda leads the Seahawks with 55 kills after a 35-kill week, while sophomore Courtney Graham ranks among the national leaders with 33 total blocks.
Freshman setter Addi Vaughn was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday after averaging 9.56 assists per set against Alabama State and Gardner-Webb, including a 48-assist outing against the Runnin' Bulldogs.
ABOUT THE CRIMSON
Harvard arrives at 3-0 after sweeping Fairfield, beating Holy Cross in four and taking a five-set decision at Northeastern last weekend. It marks the program's third 3-0 start in the last four years. Sophomore Sofia Rossi paced the Crimson with 38 kills and 30 digs on the weekend, including a six-ace match against Fairfield.
Senior middle blocker Ryleigh Patterson posted 20 total blocks over three matches and ranks among the national leaders at 1.67 blocks per set. Friday marks the first meeting between Norfolk State and Harvard.
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
UNC Asheville brings a 7-1 record to Wilmington and has won six straight, most recently sweeping MEAC member N.C. Central on Tuesday. The Bulldogs are hitting .242 as a team and holding opponents to .129.
Addie Brookbank leads UNCA with 89 kills and 68 digs, while Sarah Wadsworth has 86 kills and a team-high 20 aces. Lydia Pate is hitting .422 with 54 kills and 26.0 blocks, and setter Elise Jensen has 179 assists (6.63 per set) to go with 17 aces. Libero Izzy Perkins leads the defense with 79 digs.
SERIES HISTORY
UNC Wilmington leads the all-time series with Norfolk State, 6-1. The Seahawks swept the first six meetings dating to 1998, but the Spartans broke through in the most recent matchup, taking a five-set decision in Wilmington on Sept. 9, 2023. Friday marks the first meeting between the programs since.
UNC Asheville holds a 1-0 edge in its series with Norfolk State, having swept the Spartans at a neutral site on Sept. 12, 2008. Saturday's rematch comes 18 years to the day.
Friday's match against Harvard will be the first meeting between the two programs.
