Box Score
HAMPTON, Va. — Whitney Johnson and Holliday Eller each had 11 kills to lead No. 1 (northern division) Maryland Eastern Shore to a 3-0 win over No. 4 (southern division) Norfolk State Friday morning at Holland Hall on the campus of Hampton University. The Lady Hawks will take on Delaware State in the semifinals at 5 p.m.
Eller hit .429 with two solo blocks and Johnson, the 2007 MEAC Player of the Year, hit .292 with one assist and a dig as UMES (23-3) increased its nation-leading win streak to 21 games.
Senior Vanessa Faircloth (Lumberton, N.C.) led NSU with six kills and junior Chantel Cherry (Portsmouth, Va.) had five kills and three digs.
NSU ends the season at 7-26. Head coach Jennifer Fry has had a relatively successful first year, helping the Spartans to improve in several areas. The 2007 season marked the first time that NSU has made it to the MEAC Tournament since 2004, when all 11 teams advanced to tournament play. It was also the first time since November 2003 that NSU won a conference match.
The Spartans have also played high-caliber teams in 2007 than they have in the past, including Temple and Rutgers. Despite the team's record, the Spartans have improved since last year and have been competitive in several matches.
