3 NSU Tennis Players Earn All-MEAC Honors

RALEIGH, N.C.Three Norfolk State University tennis players earned All-MEAC second-team honors as announced on Thursday night at the conference's post-season awards banquet.

 

On the men's side, sophomore Miroslav Vlcek (Vyskov, Czech Republic) and senior Pavel Suchy (Ochoz u Brna, Czech Republic) earned second-team accolades. Vlcek, who plays at the No. 1 slot for NSU, battled through a nagging ankle injury to post a 9-5 singles record. The 2006 MEAC Rookie of the Year, Vlcek teamed with Petr Krakora (Brno, Czech Republic) to go 10-2 at No. 1 doubles.

 

Suchy tied for the team's best singles record, with a 13-3 mark. He saw time at Nos. 3, 4 and 5. Suchy was 8-1 at No. 4.

 

On the women's side, junior Fiorella Valdivia (Lima, Peru) earned her second consecutive All-MEAC second team award. Valdivia, who plays No. 1 for the Spartans, is 13-3 overall and 8-2 against MEAC competition in singles play. She has also teamed with Lerissa Morris (Kingstown, SVG) to go 9-4 at No. 1 doubles for the Spartan women.

 

Both NSU teams play noon matches on Friday in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Championship. The No. 3 NSU men (13-4, 7-2 MEAC) face No. 6 Howard, while the Spartan women (7-10, 5-5) play No. 3 Hampton.
