Spartan Men Win 3rd Straight, Top Coppin State 65-60

Murphy Goes 10-of-10 from Free Throw Line

NORFOLK, Va.
Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) scored a game-high 21 points and went 10-of-10 from the free throw line to help Norfolk State secure its third consecutive win, 65-60, over Coppin State on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.

Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) added 12 points and Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) 10 for the Spartans, who improved to 5-8 overall, 2-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.

Tywain McKee scored 19 points and Antwan Harrison 17 for the Eagles (3-12, 0-2), who lost their 10th straight contest.

For the third straight game, NSU raced out to a big lead and had to hold on in the final stages. The Spartans held CSU to 31 percent shooting in the first half, which ended with the Spartans leading, 33-23.

NSU opened the second half on a 16-5 run, capped by Murphy's third 3-pointer of the game, to take its largest lead, 49-28, with 13:04 remaining in the game. But the Eagles, who shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half, went on a 25-6 run to get within a point. McKee drained a 3-pointer from the right win to trim the Spartans' lead to 57-56 with 3:13 remaining.

But the Spartans held CSU scoreless for the next three minutes, while Murphy went 6-of-6 from the foul line to seal it.

NSU shot just 40 percent for the game, but scored 20 points off 15 Eagles' turnovers and shot 75 percent (18-of-24) from the free throw line.

Lyons and Deloach both dished out four assists for NSU. Larry Vickers (Virginia Beach, Va.) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, and Deloach snared six.

NSU faces Morgan State (7-7, 2-0) at 9 p.m. on Monday night at Echols Hall. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
