NORFOLK, Va. — Rashida Suber scored a game-high 19 points to lead four Coppin State players in double figures as the Lady Eagles downed Norfolk State 76-56 on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.
Coppin State (6-9, 1-1 MEAC) dominated just about every aspect of the game. The Lady Eagles shot 39.5 percent from the floor (30-of-76), outrebounded NSU 54-38, and forced 24 Spartan turnovers that resulted in 26 points.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 12-4 lead on a jumper by Danielle Anders with 15:42 left in the first half. A layup by Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) with 13:51 left cut CSU's lead to three, 12-9, but Suber hit a jumper with 12:09 left to push the lead to five, 14-9. The Lady Eagles did not look back and took a 41-20 lead into halftime.
NSU (2-9, 0-2) came out hot in the second half, but it was not enough to outdo CSU. Payne and Natasha Huntley (Greensboro, N. C.) scored eight of their 12 and 14 points, respectively, in the second period, with each connecting on three of their seven field goals.
Payne hit the second of her two 3-pointers with 2:08 left in the game to bring NSU within 16, 72-56, but CSU hit two more baskets to seal the 76-56 win.
Despite the loss, the Spartans made a season-high seven 3-pointers and made 20 field goals, the second most this season. They shot 32.3 percent from the field (20-of-62), 29.2 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (7-of-24), and 56.3 percent from the charity stripe (9-of-16).
For CSU Shalamar Oakley had 12 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Anders poured in 18 points, while Whitney Cunningham had 15 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.
Huntley led the Spartans with career-highs of 14 points and six assists, and had four steals. Payne had 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists, all career-highs. Areya Walker (Portsmouth, Va.), NSU's leading rebounder, grabbed a game-high tying 12 boards and had seven points.
Tiffany Gadsden (Columbia, S.C.) had six points, five rebounds, and a game-high five blocks. Gadsden, who has 38 blocks in 11 games this season, is on pace to break the single-season record for blocked shots (65). She claimed the single-game record on Feb. 5, 2007 with 11 blocks against Bethune-Cookman and finished the season with 59 blocks.
The Spartans return to action on Monday night when they host Morgan State at 6 p.m.
