Mitchell, Freshmen Show Well at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Freshman She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) earned a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 5-04.5, while freshman Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) finished eighth in the mile run (5:16.45) to lead the Norfolk State women's track team on Saturday at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

Junior Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.) turned in an eighth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18-02.25 and was NSU's top finisher in the 55m hurdles (8.53). Freshman Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) recorded NSU's next best mark in the long jump (17-00.5) and finished behind Faulkner in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.64.

Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.), another first-year Spartan, finished 10th and 14th, respectively, in the 200m (25.52) and the 300m (40.33). Sanford also posted a time of 7.29 in the 55m preliminaries. Junior Portia Davenport (Dale City, Va.) trailed Sanford in the 200m and 300m with times of 25.84 and 42.28, respectively. 

The distance medley team of Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.), Kirby, Chynell Gray (Virginia Beach, Va.), and Chichester turned in a ninth place finish with a time of 12:43.28.

Sophomores Alyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.) (1:21.98) and Candace Shoates (Newport News, Va.) (1:25.10) and senior Rachel Griffin (Newport News, Va.) (1:25.86) were the Spartans' top finishers in the 500 meters.

Pickett, Griffin, Chichester, and Shoates ran the 4x400m, finishing in 4:05.34.

The Spartans travel to Landover, Md. to take part in the University of Maryland's Invitational meet on Saturday.
