Box Score

DOVER, Del. – The Norfolk State University women's basketball team used a 17-8 run to start the second half, but Delaware State limited NSU to just eight points in the last 12 minutes of the game en route to a 63-42 win Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

NSU (2-11, 0-4 MEAC) went into halftime down 34-17, but came out focused in the second half. Ebony Gibbs (Petersburg, Va.), who rejoined the team after serving an eight-game suspension, hit a pair of free throws with 13:49 left in the game and Areya Walker (Portsmouth, Va.) followed with layup at the 12:25 mark to bring the Spartans within eight, 42-34.

But the Delaware State (7-9, 2-0) defense came alive and stifled the Spartans' effort. For the remainder of the game, NSU only made two field goals and four free throws.

The Lady Hornets shot 37.3 percent from the field for the game (22-of-59) and forced 36 Spartan turnovers that led to 32 points. NSU was 14-of-42 from the field (33.3 percent) and outrebounded DSU 38-37. It was the second time this season that NSU outrebounded an opponent.

Keyhana Wakefield led DSU with 14 points and had three rebounds and five steals. Katreem Palmer had 13 points and five rebounds, while Ashlee Burbage had 11 points and five boards. Jameka Smith had a game-high seven steals.

For NSU, Gibbs and Walker both had 10 points. Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) and Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) each scored eight points.

The Spartans head to Princess Anne, Md. for a 5:30 p.m. contest Monday against Maryland Eastern Shore.
