LANDOVER, Md. – Freshmen Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.) and Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) turned in first place finishes in the 400m (58.03) and the 800m (2:17.40), respectively, for Norfolk State on Saturday at the University of Maryland Terrapin Invitational.
Chichester also paced the Spartans in the mile run, finishing in 5:14.90. Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.) and Chynell Gray (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out NSU's top three in the mile in 2:26.65 and 2:38.09, respectively.
NSU got other solid performances in the running events from juniors Cheri Hodges (Raleigh, N.C.) and Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.). Hodges ran a 7.96 in the 60m preliminaries to qualify for the finals, and finished 11 in the finals in 8.00. Faulkner clocked an 8.28 in the 60m preliminaries and earned a 10th place finish in the 60m hurdles (9.22). She ran a 9.10 in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles.
Sophomore Alyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.) and senior Rachel Griffin (Newport News, Va.) were the Spartans' top finishers in the 200m. Pickett finished in 27.20 and Griffin crossed the finish line in 28.37.
In the field events, the freshmen did well also. Freshmen She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) and Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) finished seventh and ninth, respectively, in the high jump with both clearing 5-03. Jenkins also finished third in the triple jump (38-11.75) and 14th in the long jump (16-09.75).
Sophomore Janet Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) and freshman Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) both earned top five finishes in the long jump. Brown finished fourth with a jump of 17-09.50 and Kirby followed with a jump of 17-08.00 to take fifth place. Kirby also ran a 9.19 in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles.
Junior Sasha Wilson (West Columbia, S.C.) finished sixth in the shot put (40-06.25) and was followed by freshman Tiphani Harris (Chesapeake, Va.) with a throw of 36-04.75 and freshman Alyce Harrell (Columbia, Md.) (34.01.25).
The Spartans travel to State College, Pa. to take part in the Penn State Open on Friday and Saturday.
