Bowlers Open with 7-3 Mark at N.C. A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State bowling team opened its 2008-09 season by compiling a 7-3 record last weekend at the MEAC Southern Division meet hosted by North Carolina A&T.

The Spartans got off to a sluggish start, winning just two of five team games on Saturday. The Spartans defeated North Carolina A&T (840-748) and Winston-Salem State (828-759). NSU lost matches to Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M and South Carolina State, with the losses to B-CU and FAMU coming by 16 pins or less.

Tiffany Hunt (Norfolk, Va.) led the Spartans by knocking down an average of 193.8 pins in her four team games. Lacey Smith (Oklahoma City, Okla.) averaged 169.2 pins and Cathryn Myrick (Virginia Beach, Va.) 167.4

NSU turned it around in Sunday's baker competition, winning all five matches. In the best-of-7 games format, the Spartans won 20 of 28 games to finish the weekend at 7-3, 5-3 in MEAC matches.

NSU is back in action Nov. 21-23 at the UMES Hawk Classic in Millsboro, Del.
