NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State women's basketball team opens the 2008-09 season on Friday at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. Tip-off is scheduled for noon at the BankUnited Center.

The Spartans are lead by second-year head coach Tara A. Owens. Six letterwinners from last season return, including seniors Ebony Gibbs (Petersburg, Va.) and Tashawna Higgins (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.). 

NSU was 5-23 overall and 1-15 in MEAC play in 2007-08 and finished the regular-season in 11th place. The Spartans fell to Morgan State in the opening round of the 2008 MEAC Tournament.

Miami went 9-21 in 2007-08 and posted a 2-12 ACC record, finishing 12th in the league. The Hurricanes, under fourth-year head coach Katie Meier, return nine letterwinners and two starters from last year. It is the first meeting between NSU and Miami.
