Women’s Track Does Well In Season Opener at CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Norfolk State women's track and field team turned in several top-10 performances in its season-opener on Saturday at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open.

The field events were highlighted by sophomore She'Anna Mitchell (Newport News, Va.) and junior Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) tying for first place in the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 6 inches.

Sophomore jumper Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) finished second in the long jump with a leap of 18-03¾, while freshman pole vaulter Katie Wright (Virginia Beach, Va.) cleared 10-6 to finish sixth in her event.

Several seasoned veterans paced the team in the running events. Senior Victoria Faulkner (Newport News, Va.) qualified for the 55-meter hurdles in 8.28 and finished fourth in the finals in 8.35. In the 55-meters, junior Tierra Flowers (Coatesville, Pa.) and sophomore Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va.) finished seventh (7.12) and eighth (7.20), respectively.

Sophomore distance runner Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) took third in the mile, finishing in 5:12.45. Freshman Georgette Priester (Glen Allen, Va.) ran a 12:50.48 in the 3000 meters to finish 10th, while the distance medley team of Chichester, Syeeda Gee (Philadelphia, Md.), Jamia Hutto (Orlando, Fla.) and Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.) won it in 13:15.26.

The Spartans return to action on Jan. 10 at the Father Diamond Invitational hosted by George Mason in Fairfax, Va.
